Writing Update – February 2017

Jozi Flash Anthology Update

January was quite a busy writing month as I had to finish all eight stories for the second Jozi Flash anthology. It pushed me quite a bit as every story is in a different genre and need to include bot a picture and a sentence prompt. Not that I’m complaining about all the extra exercise, mind you!

Now it’s on to the editing stage of the stories and I’m looking forward to getting some (constructive) feedback on how to improve the stories.

Patreon Fiction

The flash fiction I had started out with has morphed (once again) into a long short story (though I think not quite a novella). What I can divulge at this stage is that it is about Trevian (he of The Oath and who also plays a part in Grove of Graves). It will be split into 2 or 3 parts as I did with Grove of Graves. More info will be put on my Patreon page.

Other Fiction

There are a few other bits and pieces I’m busy with – mostly flash fiction and which I want to finish in February and March. I have also started to put some more fiction on my Wattpad page and have also replaced some of the older covers with better-looking ones.

Charms of Life and Death (which is to be book 1 of The Ruon Chronicles) is also still in the works and I am slowly but surely working through the draft.

Announcing Jozi Flash 2017!

We’ve decided to do it again – in 2017 another Jozi Flash anthology will see the light!

tumblr_n2rfbgdesm1tqnoc1o1_400

My first story is basically done (it just needs some editing) and all in all each writer will have 8 flash fiction stories in the anthology. Now how’s that for some quality reading time?

By now (if you read the blog often), you probably know about Nthato Morakabi; awesome writer extraordinaire. Well he is taking part again, as well as some new writers who have joined our writing group during the year. I think it should be quite interesting to see how our stories have grown over the past year as well!

Chasing Dreams Publishing will once again be the publisher of the anthology, and it will be published in March 2017.

Writing Update: May (Part 2)

Since the previous writing update quite a lot of exciting things have been happening. Here’s a short update as to what I’ve been up to (and what I’m up to at the moment).

Flash Fiction Collection Dim Mirrors Published!

About a week ago I published Dim Mirrors on Noisetrade Books. The collection is made up of 39 flash fiction stories (stories shorter than 1 000 words). While they are mostly fantasy and speculative in nature, there are some non-genre stories as well.

You can either get a copy for free or you can leave a tip. (I know you need to give an address when you sign up with Noisetrade, but I’m not planning to do anything with the info they send me other than going ‘O, cool, I have readers in place X!’.)

Just a reminder that the (free) anthology Jozi Flash is also available! Download Jozi Flash by following this link. There you will also find out more about the contributing authors. (Hint: They’re all awesome.)

SASMARS – Or, me acting all academic

During the next two months I will be hard at work on the article I’m presenting at the SASMARS (Southern Africa Society for Medieval and Renaissance Studies) Conference in August. Plane tickets have been bought so there’s no turning back now! If you’re curious about the paper I’ll be presenting, follow this link. It’s not medieval Icelandic zombies this time (read the Eyrbyggja Saga!), but I still find my topic very interesting.

Patreon – Yes, you can become one of my patrons!

After quite a bit of thought, I decided to join Patreon. If you haven’t heard of Patreon yet, check this out.

Now you may ask yourself what you will be getting in return for becoming a patron – well, the short answer is that you will get to have a look behind the scenes (though not a video of me writing; that will just be boring). Here’s what I’ve decided on (pledges for a maximum of 2 fiction posts per month, Afrikaans fiction not included):

  • $1 Pledge: One Patreon-only flash fiction story per month.
  • $5 Pledge: One Patreon-only flash fiction story per month, vote on title/promt for monthly flash fiction story.
  • $10 Pledge: One Patreon-only flash fiction story per month, choice of prompt for the flash fiction story, see worldbuilding notes and stories of Airtha-Eyrassa – follow the story of the world as it unfolds.
  • $15 Pledge: One Patreon-only flash fiction story per month, choice of prompt for the flash fiction story, see worldbuilding notes and stories of Airtha-Eyrassa – follow the story of the world as it unfolds, see maps of Airtha-Eyrassa, see behind the scenes of any other WIP(s).
  • $20 Pledge: One Patreon-only flash fiction story per month, choice of prompt for the flash fiction story, see worldbuilding notes and stories of Airtha-Eyrassa – follow the story of the world as it unfolds, see maps of Airtha-Eyrassa, see behind the scenes of any other WIP(s), see early drafts of current WIP/character sketches – see how the project grows and develops.
  • More than $20 Pledge: One Patreon-only flash fiction story per month, choice of prompt for the flash fiction story, see worldbuilding notes and stories of Airtha-Eyrassa – follow the story of the world as it unfolds, see maps of Airtha-Eyrassa, see behind the scenes of any other WIP(s), see early drafts of current WIP/character sketches – see how the project grows and develops, become a character in the novel.

Interested? Head over to my Patreon page, have a read through, and make your pledge!

And, finally, to everyone reading the blog, commenting, and sharing my stuff, thank you, thank you, thank you! Without the support I’ve been getting online it would be a lot more difficult to follow my dream.

Flash Fiction on Wattpad

If you would like to read more of my fiction, you can find the following collections of flash fiction on Wattpad:

Yesterday’s Colours and Other Stories

Invisible/Unseen

Reaper Songs

Short Stories and Camp NaNoWriMo

After realising that I forgot to update my word count for a few days (oops), I at last counted my words and am now on 18 200 words! So I should reach my goal during the local write-in this weekend.

I’m currently busy finishing up a short story called Die uil en die skoppensboer (The Owl and the Reaper) which I want to enter into a local competition. I should finish it tomorrow evening and then send it off either on Saturday or early next week – and then comes the long wait.

I’ve also worked on some of the worldbuilding of Airtha-Eyrassa (the world in which The Charms of Life and Death takes place). While making sure that I do not fall into the trap of worldbuilder’s disease, there is a few things I just needed to clear up for myself. Once that is out of the way, I should spend most of the write-in editing the novel (yay!).

Next week will then be the final week of Camp NaNoWriMo, and is also the week when I have a few days’ vacation!

Jozi Flash Anthology Now Available!

Jozi Flash Blurb

jozi-flash-cover-2
There are no zombie-dalek-rainbow-unicorns in this anthology. Not for lack of trying – they just wouldn’t play nicely with the other characters.
Instead you’ll find a genie with a unique wish, a border post between worlds, a light romance, an alien recorder and a very special chair, amongst others.

This is what you get when you challenge five talented South African writers with a series of prompts and strict word limits: Jozi Flash – an anthology of 29 bite-sized stories with a huge amount of heart.
As unique as the narrators, these tales range from the macabre to heart warming in fewer words than it took to write this blurb.
The zombie-dalek-rainbow-unicorns ate the rest.
