When you suffer from chronic illness – whether physical or mental – there are small moments to celebrate that which ‘should’ be mundane moments of life.
For example, there is seeing the sunrise and being awake before the rest of the world starts its noisy scuffle to get kids to school on time, to be at work on time, or even to reach the end-of-season sale before anyone else does. There is a giant mug of rooibos and vanilla tea to help start the day with – to keep from drinking caffeine. Meeting self-imposed project or goal deadlines is also a reason for celebration.
Of course, these small victories should be celebrated, but larger goals should not be swept to the side. It’s so easy to forget just how much you’re capable of, especially on the difficult days, that keeping your eye on your goals can seem impossible.
Long-term goals, I think, is very important, however. Not only do they give you something to work towards, but they also give you something to look forward to. Once you have reached your goal, your life will change – how much it will change will depend on the goal; whether it’s finishing school, going to school, learning a new skill or even moving to a new city.
Still, I think if you don’t have some kind of long-term goal, it’s more difficult to get the everyday things done. I know when I have a goal I have a lot more motivation to get going in the morning – even those days I don’t particularly feel like it. I may be feeling down, but the motivation is what gets me there.
To reach my current goals, I have had to make some changes and some sacrifices. Changes include only taking the stairs at work and skipping the lift, getting into a new writing routine before and after work, and really trying to focus on the small stuff. And not just focus for the sake of focusing but for the sake of enjoying.
That is also why I’ve been on and off social media so much; I try not to have it take over all my free time instead of doing something that I’d much rather be doing. For instance, working towards a long-term goal.
I don’t want to get into the ins and outs of my current, newish goal just yet, though, as it’s still in its very early stages and I want to get some things in place first before telling it to the world!
