The Road Goes Ever On and On…

Or, looking back

Today is my last day at the job I’ve had for the past eight years. As you can imagine, it has been quite a big decision and change to make.

…every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end…*

I started working at my current job about seven months after my mother passed away and (thankfully!) only about a month after I was retrenched from my first full-time job. Yeah, that was not a fun time. At that time I was also busy (part-time) with my MA in Afrikaans. This basically meant that, during the day, I would translate between English and Afrikaans and, when I got home, would translate some Old Norse texts into Afrikaans!


During these eight years I was also blessed enough to read two papers at the 2012 and 2016 SASMARS conferences (Medieval Icelandic zombies! Other medieval stuff! Awesomeness!).


I started using social media, started writing flash fiction, worked on longer fiction (of which some will never see the light of day, mwahahaha), and wrote silly articles for Speculative Grammarian to entertain myself.

In 2014 I earned my MA (whoohoo!) and decided to take a break before attempting to start my PhD — it had been a few difficult years (not least because I ended up being diagnosed with BP II in 2012).


I ended up taking short courses, though, after I found out that there are things like EdX, FutureLearn, and Shaw Academy. There. Is. Just. So. Much. To. Learn!


Once I finished the degree, I at last had time to take part in NaNoWriMo — during which I met awesome and awesomely talented writers like Nthato Morakabi. Since then I have taken part in every Camp NaNoWriMo and NaNoWriMo and enjoy it immensely.


Friends and colleagues got married, had children, moved away, and moved back again. We all grew up and grew older, although I think none of us feel as if it has already been eight years. But, as the song goes, the road goes ever on and on…


That being said, I am very excited to start this new part of my journey and story!
