Indrukke: Verbeel jou dis somer deur Abraham H. de Vries

Ek het Verbeel jou dis somer by my plaaslike Exclusive Books aangeskaf en is nie teleurgestel nie. De Vries se kortverhale bly vir my puik voorbeelde van die Afrikaanse letterkunde en hierdie bundel toon net weer hoekom hy so ’n geliefde skrywer is.

Die verhale in die bundel is egter almal donker en somber, so moenie verwag dat hierdie bundel ’n “goedvoel” versameling is nie. Hoewel dit in 2009 uitgegee is, is die sosio-politiese probleme en vraagstukke nog net so toepaslik soos wat dit toe was – indien nie selfs méér van toepassing nie.

’n Veranderende (kwynende?) landelike leefwyse, geweld, die onafwendbare verloop van tyd, spoke van die verlede en die onthou van gebeurtenisse en geskiedenis word elk in die bundel aangeraak. De Vries se verhale, deur sy meesterlike skryfwerk, word baie meer as net sketse of kontreiverhale, dit word die verhale waarmee elke Suid-Afrikaner en leser hom- of haarself op een of ander stadium mee kan vereenselwig. En dít is tog een van die sterkste punte en saambindende elemente van enige verhaal.

Ek kan Verbeel jou dis somer hoog aanbeveel vir liefhebbers van die letterkunde in die algemeen en nie slegs van die kortverhaalkuns nie.
