NaNoWriMo Prep – Pantsing and Planning

Protagonist. Check.

Antagonist. Check.

Plot. Check.

Let the magic begin! Well, almost.

Here we are one weekend away from the start of NaNoWriMo! Can you believe how quickly the time flies? I’ve been prepping a lot more this year than last year, but I still find that I am much more of a pantser. My overall outline for the book (genre: epic fantasy) is basically in place now, though there is scope for it to change in some aspects as I go along. I am still planning on trying my very best to get the first draft done by end of November and then being able to start the first revisions in December. This may take more than 50 000 words, though.

I still have some research to do, but I’ve now started to put the research into “stuff I need to know right now” and “details you can still make sure of later” before I get carried away completely just before NaNoWriMo is about to start. The same goes for worldbuilding – now is not the time to write a detailed history of a town which will not feature in the book at all, for instance.

Next week I will be doing some last minute preparation, including finishing up some of the minor characters’ character sheets in my Scrivener project file. And, because you can’t live on carrot sticks, I’ll have to go and get some jelly beans as well…

A recap of the novel I’m writing for this year’s NaNoWriMo:

The Ruon Healers hold some of the greatest magic in all of Airtha-Eyrassa. With needle and thread they can weave charms which can save lives. Then Elame finds a way in which the charms can be twisted and she and her followers can hold sway over life and death.

The Ruon Wars drenched whole towns in blood before the Airus rose up and helped them defeat Elame and lock her and her followers in a prison on an island in the Ahfara Sea.

Now the pillars of Elame’s Island has been broken, letting countless Vidolf escape their leader’s prison. But Elame is dead and a new leader for the Vidolf must be found in her bloodline. These enemies of the Ruon, who serve only the Betrayers, want to reclaim the lands they lost in the Ruon Wars.

In the sanctuary of Holt Haliern the Ruon hears of the Vidolf’s escape and know that they have to find Ruon powerful enough to stand against the Vidolf. Selena Tellah and Reisa Querna, two promising Ruon, have completed their studies when they are called by their own leader to help in the fight against the Vidolf. Reisa who has to fight against the demons inside of her and Selena who may become even more powerful and dangerous than Ruaha or any of the Vidolf.

Now Selena and Reisa must find a way to read Ruaha’s book of charms – the charms of the greatest Ruon to ever live – and go down a path that can either save Airtha-Eyrassa from another war, or can lead to destruction and death and turning into Vidolf themselves if they aren’t careful in how they use their magic.
